Beth Schwartzapfel is a seasoned journalist and educator, currently serving as a Staff Writer for The Marshall Project since 2014, where the focus is on the American criminal justice system. Prior to this role, Beth worked as a freelance journalist from 2004 to 2014, contributing long-form and narrative stories primarily on criminal justice and public health issues, with work featured in prominent publications such as the New York Times and Mother Jones. Additionally, Beth served as an Adjunct Instructor at The City University of New York from 2008 to 2011 and gained valuable experience as a Senior Research Assistant at Miriam Hospital from 2001 to 2005, where the emphasis was on outreach and education for patients with hepatitis C and HIV. Beth holds an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from The New School and a Bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature from Brown University.
