Howard Savage

Howard is a practicing ophthalmologist at the Kaiser Permanente Largo Medical Center. He attended Princeton University and received his MD from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Medical School. Dr. Savage completed his internship at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and a residency in ophthalmology in 1998 from the Greater Baltimore Medical Center.

Dr. Savage joined the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group first in 1998 and then ran the residency program in ophthalmology at George Washington University School of Medicine from 2000-2004. He led a USAID-sponsored public health campaign and cataract microsurgery training program in Tahoua, Niger West Africa from 2004-5, and rejoined MAPMG in 2005.

Dr. Savage performs between 300-500 cataract surgeries per year and receives rave reviews from his patients. He is well known in the local community and has been honored as a Washingtonian Top Doctor for many years.

Dr. Savage has served as quality lead for the Largo Medical Center, the MAPMG site lead for Largo from 2010-13, and the chief of ophthalmology from 2013-2015. He has served as elected director to the MAPMG Board of Directors from January 2017, serving on the Nominating Committee, Physician Recognition, Finance, Audit, Retirement, and Administrative Issues Committees. He was re-elected for a second term beginning Jan 2021.

Dr. Savage resides in Annapolis on the South River where he is fond of boating, kayaking, and fishing. He lives with his wife, Dr. Kathleen Hill a family practice physician specializing in Global Health for JHPIEGO, an affiliate of Johns Hopkins University. They have two wonderful daughters.
