Lead, Alert And Response Operations (aro)/gis Sections at Defense Health Agency

Christian Bautista, MSc MPH PhD, has extensive work experience in the field of biosurveillance and epidemiology. Christian is currently leading the Alert and Response Operations (ARO) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) sections at the Integrated Biosurveillance (IB) Branch of the Defense Health Agency. In this role, they are responsible for near real-time communication of infectious disease and health threats to military populations within the Department of Defense (DoD).

Prior to their current position, Dr. Bautista served as a Senior Epidemiologist and Lead Biosurveillance Epidemiologist at the DHA AFHSB, where they provided operational and analytical scientific and technical expertise in support of the organization's biosurveillance mission. Christian managed and coordinated a team of analysts and contributed to the detection of emerging threats or disease outbreaks.

Before joining the Defense Health Agency, Dr. Bautista worked as a Senior Researcher and Epidemiologist at the US Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, where they established a network of contacts in research and surveillance analysis of emerging and re-emerging diseases. Christian also served as a Public Health Researcher for the US Military HIV Research Program, participating in the design and analysis of HIV/STI studies worldwide.

Dr. Bautista began their career as a Research Biostatistician and Data Manager at the Naval Medical Research Center. In this role, they provided statistical support for NAMRU-6 and played a key role in a large-scale clinical trial on the protective efficacy of a cholera vaccine conducted in Peru.

With their diverse experience in biosurveillance, epidemiology, and research, Dr. Christian Bautista has made significant contributions to the field of public health.

Christian Bautista obtained their Master of Science (MS) degree in Biostatistics from the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia between 2000 and 2004. From 2008 to 2010, they pursued their Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Uniformed Services University. Subsequently, from 2011 to 2018, Bautista attended Lancaster University, where they earned their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Public Health.
