Ian Haddon

Managing Director at The MSA Group

Ian Haddon has extensive work experience in the field of geology and management. Ian started their career as a Geologist at the Council for Geoscience in 1995. During this time, they were responsible for geological mapping and exploration projects in South Africa, as well as mineral exploration programs in various countries.

In 2005, Ian became the Manager of the Central Regions at the Council for Geoscience. In this role, they oversaw geological mapping and exploration projects in South Africa and managed the delivery of the statutory program. Additionally, they were involved in mineral exploration and regional mapping programs in countries such as Mozambique, Madagascar, Morocco, Argentina, and Ghana. Ian also focused on developing commercial opportunities for the business unit.

In 2007, Ian joined The MSA Group as the Head of Department for Geological Services. Ian was responsible for leading a team of over 50 exploration geologists and overseeing projects throughout Africa and the Middle East. Their responsibilities included setting performance targets, managing budgets, and driving business development efforts.

In 2010, Ian was promoted to the role of Head of Group Operations at The MSA Group. In this position, they had overall responsibility for all consulting divisions, including Geology and Exploration, Mining, Mineral Resources, Environmental, and Diamond Laboratory Services. Ian played a key role in the development and positioning of new service offerings. Additionally, they implemented project management systems and procedures, contributing to the achievement of ISO 9001, SANAS 17025, and OHSAS 18001 accreditation.

In 2013, Ian took on the role of General Manager at The MSA Group. In this capacity, they were involved in commercial management and control, international and local business development, marketing, and business strategy design and implementation. Ian also provided project management and consulting services to key clients and held the position of Chair of the Health and Safety committee.

Ian's most recent position at The MSA Group is as the Managing Director, which they assumed in November 2019. In this role, they continue to lead the company and oversee its operations.

Ian Haddon's education history begins in 1990 when they enrolled at Rhodes University to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Geology and Economics. Ian successfully completed their undergraduate studies in 1994. In the same year, they obtained a Bachelor of Science Honors degree in Geology from Rhodes University.

In 2005, Ian Haddon attended the University of the Witwatersrand where they undertook a PhD program in Geology. The duration of their doctoral studies was one year.

Continuing their educational journey, in 2006, Ian Haddon enrolled in the Management Development Program (MDP) at the University of Pretoria/Universiteit van Pretoria. This program focused on business and commerce in a general context.

Ian Haddon's academic pursuits led him to pursue a Master of Business Administration degree, specializing in Executive Management (EMBA), from the University of Cape Town. Ian began in 2016, completing the program with distinction in 2018.

In addition to their formal degrees, Ian Haddon has obtained certifications. Ian is recognized as a Fellow (FGSSA) by the Geological Society of South Africa. Ian also holds the designation of Pr.Sci.Nat from the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP), indicating their professional expertise in the natural sciences field.
