Carol McCarthy

Carol McCarthy has a diverse and extensive work experience in various communication and editorial roles. Carol is currently the Senior Director, Editorial Content at The News Literacy Project since July 2022. Prior to that, they served as the Director of Communications at the same organization from December 2018 to June 2022. Before joining The News Literacy Project, Carol worked as a Proprietor of a freelance writing and editing business called The Last Word since June 2014. Carol has also served as a Public Information Officer at the University of Rhode Island from May 2013 to December 2018. Carol's previous experience includes working as a Communications Specialist at the Coastal Resources Center, GSO, URI, where they were responsible for writing, editing, and maintaining the center's website and social media accounts. Carol has also worked as a Deputy Managing Editor at The Day Publishing Co., where they managed deadline and quality issues, edited stories, and designed news and feature pages. Carol has held various other roles throughout their career, including Adjunct Instructor at Mitchell College and Custom Publications Editor at The Day Publishing Co. Carol began their career as a Section Editor at The Newport Daily News, where they copy-edited stories, wrote headlines, and designed pages.

Carol McCarthy's education history includes a Master's degree in Public interest journalism and political science from the University of Maryland, which they obtained from 1985 to 1987. Carol also holds a Bachelor's degree in Journalism from the University of Rhode Island, which they completed from 1981 to 1984. Carol received a diploma with distinction from Classical High School in 1980, where they focused on college prep studies. In 2016, they attended Thread at Yale for writing, although they did not earn a degree from that program. Carol also attended the 2018 Santa Fe Science Writing Workshop for science writing, although information regarding the time period is not given.

In addition to their educational background, Carol McCarthy has obtained the CAPM certification from the PMI in March 2013 and holds the SPIN certification from MadDogg Fitness, which they obtained in January 2009.
