As the Dean of the School of Open Learning, Dr K C Li is keen to assist students to effectively complete our part-time and distance learning programmes and succeed in gaining undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications of the University. Dr Li is also the Director of Research Affairs, overseeing research activities and promoting research studies at the University. In addition, he leads research in innovative learning, teaching and educational administration at the University’s Institute for Research in Open and Innovative Education. Externally, he has been appointed as Visiting Professor of Middlesex University in the United Kingdom and a number of institutions in China, such as Hebei Academy of Social Sciences and Hebei University of Economics and Business.
Dr Li has published over 170 refereed journal articles/book chapters/conference papers and 8 monographs/textbooks, co-edited 12 books, and served as the editor for the Asian Association of Open Universities Journal and one of the editors for the 'Innovation and Technology in Education' Section of SN Computing Science, guest editor of special issues for five renowned journals, as well as editorial board member for distinguished journals. Being keenly interested in research in innovative and open education, Dr Li has successfully obtained funding for a large number of research and development projects in related research areas.
For almost three decades, Dr Li has devoted to open education and related development, for which he has played a broad variety of roles, including strand/department head, course developer, course development coordinator, postgraduate and undergraduate programme leader, course coordinator, and supervisor for doctoral students. He has headed teaching teams in the disciplines of business, education and language studies. In 2016, he founded the University’s Institute for Research in Open and Innovative Education.
For the Asian Association of Open Universities which has over 60 member institutions, Dr Li also served as the Secretary-General for three years from 2014, actively promoting professional development and facilitating professional exchanges in open and distance education for the institutional members of the Association.
Being active in the academic and professional communities, Dr Li has engaged in a broad variety of community services. He is currently the President of Hong Kong Society of the Chartered Institute of Linguists, and advisor for the Programme Endorsement Sub-Committee of the Hong Kong Institute of Human Resource Management. In the past, he contributed as an advisor in a broad range of study and training programmes and as a key member in committees of various professional bodies, for example, he was the founding Chairman of the Council of Hong Kong Professional Associations.
Closely connected to the local school sector, Dr Li has been for two decades a Supervisor and Manager for many secondary and primary schools of a major sponsoring body in Hong Kong.
Dr Li has obtained three bachelor’s degrees, four master’s degrees and a PhD from renowned institutions, including the University of Hong Kong, Peking University and the University of London. He has also been awarded many professional qualifications such as Diploma in Education, Advanced Diploma in Translation, as well as Chartered Linguist and Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Linguists.
Dr Li has organized many international conferences in areas of open, online and innovative education and technology-mediated education, including the signature annual event: International Conference on Open and Innovative Education. He is also popular at local and overseas conferences and professional events as keynote and plenary speakers.
