Thomas Sturtevant

Head of School at Ross School

A recognized school leader and educator for almost four decades, Thomas Sturtevant possesses a wealth of experience in some of the finest independent schools in the nation. Tom began his teaching career at Tabor Academy, where he taught English, was a dorm parent, and was a three-season coach. From there, he served as the Director of College Counseling at St. Andrews, Upper School Principal at Friends Academy in Locust Valley, and Head of School for eight years at Northfield Mount Hermon, where he successfully led an $88M capital campaign and several strategic plans for a school with 200 staff members on a campus of 1000+ acres that included a working farm.

In 2011, Tom became an advisor to the President for Educational Programs at Keystone Academy of Beijing, after which he accepted the role of Founding Head of the Seed Foundation in Washington, DC. Most recently, Tom served for seven years as the Executive Director and School Head for Hyde Leadership Charter School in the Bronx, where he was responsible for the strategic, academic, and operational leadership and success of one of New York’s largest public charter schools, enrolling over a thousand students from Kindergarten through Grade 12.

In 2021, Tom accepted the role of Founding Head of Broadstone Academy in Shenzhen, China, where he had already successfully recruited an entire faculty and senior leadership team in anticipation of a July 2022 opening. Regrettably, as a result of China’s regulatory changes and an array of complex COVID challenges, the school will not open, prompting Tom to consider other headships.

A cum laude graduate of Tufts University, where he was captain of the varsity lacrosse team, Tom earned his master’s at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.
