Karen McLean has a diverse work experience in the field of pediatric healthcare and research. Karen started their career as a paediatric trainee at The Royal Children's Hospital in 2001 and completed their basic physician training before specializing in Community Child Health. In 2006, they were appointed as the Chief Resident. From 2008, they worked as a consultant paediatrician in the Sleep Disorders Clinic and led the Pathway to Good Health multidisciplinary assessment clinic. In 2022, they took on the role of Vulnerable Child Health Lead in the Centre for Community Child Health (CCCH).
In addition to their work at The Royal Children's Hospital, Karen has also worked at the Centre for Excellence in Child & Family Welfare as a Project Manager for the Child healthcare, adversity & COVID-19 project since 2021. Karen has also been associated with the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute as a Research Officer and a PhD student, specializing in child healthcare and research.
Karen McLean completed their education with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Melbourne in 1999. Karen further pursued a Master of Epidemiology from the same university in 2007. From 2017 to 2020, Karen obtained their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Melbourne. In 2023 and 2024, they attended the Australian Institute of Company Directors to earn a Generalist Directors Course (GAICD).
