Steven Spoel has a distinguished career in plant sciences, currently serving as the Chair of the Gatsby Plant Science Advisory Board and Gatsby Plant Science Advisor at the Gatsby Charitable Foundation since 2020. At The University of Edinburgh, Steven holds the position of Director of Research for Biological Sciences, overseeing research strategy across numerous laboratories. Notably, Steven is a Research Group Leader and the Director of the Institute of Molecular Plant Sciences. Additional roles include being a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, co-founding Black in Plant Science UK, and serving on various advisory boards, including the STEPS Center and the BBSRC Council. Steven holds a PhD in Plant Sciences from Duke University and an MS in Biology from Utrecht University.
