Pam Kragen has extensive experience in journalism, with a focus on arts, entertainment, dining, and theater. Pam started their career as a general assignment and business reporter at Times Advocate in 1985 and held various roles including copy editor and assistant city editor until 1996. From 1997 to 2012, they worked at North County Times as the business editor and later became the arts and features editor. Since 2012, they have been working at The San Diego Union-Tribune as the arts & entertainment editor, as well as the chief dining & theater critic.

Pam Kragen pursued their education in journalism at San Diego State University, where they obtained a Bachelor's degree from 1980 to 1984. Later, they attended the University of Southern California, focusing on Theater and Musical Theater Criticism, although the exact years of their enrollment are unknown.

In 2010, Pam Kragen pursued a fellowship in Opera and Classical Music Criticism at Columbia University. Subsequently, they further expanded their expertise by attending the National Critics Institute at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center, where they embarked on a fellowship program in Theater, Dance, Dining, and Film Criticism starting in 2022.
