Derek Waddell is the Founder of 81C Limited which was established in 2015 to offer interim management and strategic consultancy services to clients primarily in the UK and Ireland.Derek Waddell is the Founder of 81C Limited which was established in 2015 to offer interim management and strategic consultancy services to clients primarily in the UK and Ireland.

Recent interim roles have included working as the: Director of Technology Transfer at University College Cork; Head of Commercialisation, Enterprise and Investment at the University of Strathclyde; and as the Director of Converge.

Recent consultancy clients include the  Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and Teagasc.

From November 2005 until April 2015 Derek was the Director of Research Services and Commercialisation at the University of Edinburgh and CEO of Edinburgh Research and Innovation.

His main areas of responsibility included: the management of pre-award research activities; consultancy; intellectual property assessment, protection and exploitation; technology licensing; new company creation; and the operation of three on-site incubators.

From 2010-2018, Derek was a member of the international review panel for Knowledge Transfer Ireland and he is currently a member of the international review committee for the Oncode Institute (Netherlands).

Derek is a member of the Board of the Genomia Fund and is a Registered Technology Transfer Professional (RTTP).
