Joey Mongalo is an accomplished rugby coach and former player with extensive experience in defensive coaching and team leadership across various rugby organizations. Currently serving as Defence Coach for the Hollywoodbets Sharks in the URC and Champions Cup, Mongalo also holds the position of Head Coach for the Cell C Sharks Currie Cup and Head of Junior Rugby, focusing on aligning team strategies with the organization's vision. Previously, Mongalo worked with the South African Rugby Union as a Defence Coach for the SA A team and held key defensive roles with the Blue Bulls, where notable successes included achieving Currie Cup winners and URC finalists. Mongalo's coaching career spans over a decade, including roles with the Lions Rugby Company, where significant achievements included two U19 Currie Cup victories as Head Coach, and consultancy positions at the University of the Witwatersrand. In addition to practical coaching experience, Mongalo has a strong academic background with degrees in Psychology and Marketing from various universities.

Since the sport went professional and the KwaZulu-Natal Rugby Union adopted The Sharks as a brand name for their team, The Sharks have, over the past decade, evolved from a provincial rugby brand to a commercially recognised sporting brand of international acclaim, promoting an intrinsic lifestyle value as well as fashion, entertainment and sporting aspiration.
