Tony Cavalieri is a Senior Program Officer at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation where he has spent the last four years working on agricultural development in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Tony has worked extensively in international development and conservation. Before coming to Seattle, he worked with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in Washington DC and also consulted for the U. S. Agency for International Development. He served as Conservation Agriculture Advisor for The Nature Conservancy for several years. Tony spent 22 years with Pioneer Hi-Bred Int’l. Inc. where he conducted research on drought tolerance and physiological approaches to improving crops. He held a number of research leadership roles including Vice President of Pioneer. He continued in this role following the acquisition of Pioneer by DuPont. Tony served on the Board of Trustees of the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and the Science Center of Iowa. Tony received his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina in biology and was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Illinois. Tony and his wife Ellen live in Seattle and have enjoyed exploring the Pacific Northwest and supporting and volunteering with the Pacific NW horticulture and parks community. Their son and his wife and daughter live in Baltimore MD.
