Joel Sevinsky has an extensive work experience in various scientific research and leadership roles. Joel is the Founder and CEO of Theiagen Genomics since 2019, where they focus on implementing innovative bioinformatics resources for infectious disease surveillance. Prior to this, Joel worked as the Head of Molecular Science Laboratory at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment from 2016 to 2019. In this role, they designed and developed the Advanced Molecular Detection platform for outbreak surveillance and detection. From 2012 to 2016, Joel served as a Technical Fellow at Ciris Energy, Inc, where they directed the Molecular and Microbiology Program for developing microorganisms for bioconversion of biomass derived sugars. Before that, they were the Director of Molecular and Microbiology Research at Luca Technologies from 2008 to 2012, where they led a team of scientists working on biogenic methane production. Joel also worked as a Proteomics Research Scientist at Research Triangle Institute from 2004 to 2008, and as a Postdoctoral Fellow and Graduate Research Assistant at the University of Colorado, Boulder from 1995 to 2004. Joel began their career as a Research Technician at The Scripps Research Institute in 1993. Joel Sevinsky completed their Bachelor of Arts degree in Microbiology at UC Santa Barbara from 1989 to 1993. Later, they pursued their Ph.D. in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at the University of Colorado Boulder, completing it between 1995 and 2002.
