Katerina Akassoglou

Katerina Akassoglou has extensive work experience in the field of neurovascular brain immunology and pharmacology. Katerina currently holds the position of Director of the Center for Neurovascular Brain Immunology at Gladstone Institutes and UCSF since January 2021. Katerina also serves as a Senior Investigator at Gladstone Institutes, a position they have held since January 2013. Additionally, they have been the Director of the Center for In Vivo Imaging Research at Gladstone Institutes since June 2010.

Prior to their role at Gladstone Institutes, Akassoglou worked as an Associate Investigator from April 2008 to December 2012. Katerina has also been affiliated with the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) since 2008, where they have held the positions of Professor of Neurology since July 2012 and Associate Professor of Neurology from April 2008 to July 2012.

In addition, Akassoglou has experience in the biotechnology sector. Katerina founded Therini Bio, Inc. in October 2016 and currently serves as the company's Founder. Katerina is also the Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board and Director of the Board of Directors at Therini Bio, Inc.

Akassoglou has previous academic experience at the University of California San Diego, where they held various positions in the Department of Pharmacology. Katerina was an Associate Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology from 2008 to 2016, Associate Professor of Pharmacology (tenure) in 2008, and Assistant Professor of Pharmacology from 2003 to 2008. Katerina was also an adjunct Professor of Pharmacology at the University of California San Diego from 2016 to 2020.

Before their time at UCSF and the University of California San Diego, Akassoglou worked as a Research Associate at New York University from January 2002 to June 2003. Katerina also gained research experience as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Rockefeller University from October 2000 to January 2002 and at Stony Brook University from October 1998 to October 2000.

Katerina Akassoglou began their education in 1990 at Ethnikon kai Kapodistriakon Panepistimion Athinon, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences in 1994. In 1996, they attended the University of Vienna as a visiting student, focusing on the field of Neuropathology. Katerina later returned to Ethnikon kai Kapodistriakon Panepistimion Athinon and earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Neuroimmunology in 1998. Following their PhD, Katerina Akassoglou completed two postdoctoral fellowships in the Sidney Strickland Lab, first at Stony Brook University from 1998 to 2000, and then at The Rockefeller University from 2000 to 2022.
