Thorvaldsens Museum
Thorvaldsens Museum is a gem in the heart of Copenhagen. Presenting the collection of the world-famous Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) we aim to enhance everybody's enjoyment and understanding of sculptural and neoclassic art pieces and also to encourage viewing these through modern glasses. Since opening in 1848 as the first museum building in Denmark the museum has afforded visitors a very special opportunity to savour world-class architecture and neoclassic art. The museum was built with the specific purpose of housing all the works by Thorvaldsen and also his extensive collections of contemporary art of his time. A tour of the museum reveals a series of very colourful galleries in each of which stands one or few sculptures. These sculptures represent Roman gods as well as famous historical personages, and are characterized by exceptional charisma. With vibrant colours and magnificent architectural design, the powerful atmosphere of the museum building itself creates a fascinating contrast to the white sculptures, which come to stand out in a very distinct way.
