Thread Together explores better ways to support children in care to understand and make sense of their life stories.

Many children grow up with fragmented records, scattered memories and important parts of their story held across systems rather than with them. Life story work aims to help children build a coherent understanding of their past, present and future, but in practice it is often difficult to sustain due to time pressures, fragmented information and changing relationships.

Thread Together is developing a secure digital platform to support ongoing, relational life story work. The aim is to help children gradually build and revisit their stories over time, while supporting practitioners and carers to contribute safely and meaningfully.

The intention is to support the real work of life story practice: helping children explore, revisit and understand their stories over time with trusted adults.

The project is grounded in social care practice and research and is being shaped through conversations with practitioners, researchers and people with care experience.

We are currently in a learning and co-design phase and welcome conversations with:

• Local authorities interested in future pilots
• Practitioners and service leads
• Researchers and practice specialists
• People with care experience
• Specialists in areas such as safeguarding, digital design and data security
