Matthew Garcia

Director of Partnerships & Expansion at Through the Staff

In middle school, Matthew Garcia taught himself how to play the viola by watching free tutorials that he found on Youtube. Four years later, Matthew became the first musicians to join the National Youth Orchestra of the USA, which he toured around the world with for three summers, that had never had a private teacher. This feat attracted international attention from many distinguished news networks, which led Matthew to be interviewed by programs like NPR’s From the Top and BBC’s The Arts Hour. Now a rising sophomore at Harvard College, Matthew has continued to pursue his musical talents on campus while balancing his career goal to become a trauma surgeon with an additional specialization in organ transplantation. Matthew currently plays on an Italian viola that was gifted to him by the Voirin Foundation.
