Tifa Foundation

Tifa Foundation was established in 2000 carrying its vision to realize an open society in the post-dictatorship era, making it one of the prominent grantmaking organizations at the beginning of Indonesia’s transition to democracy. Until 2019, with the initial support from the Open Society Foundation (OSF), Tifa channeled more than US$38mn to finance more than 700 civil society organizations & thousands of CSOs’ initiatives. For almost two decades, Tifa Foundation partnered with various development organizations ranging from the World Bank, Japan Social Development Fund, and AusAID, and embassies that endorse the programs around Democracy and Governance, Media and Information, and Human Rights and Justice. Since the early of 2020, Tifa has been transforming from purely making grants to implementing development programs. Tifa aspires to be a professional & reliable intermediary organization through various roles such as facilitators, hubs, and knowledge management. Thus, Tifa remains relevant as a national foundation, promoting an open society and upholding openness, transparency, equality, and justice values. Currently, Tifa has been navigating the organization’s focus to prioritize programs around: - First, access to justice that promotes inclusive policies based on respect towards human-rights values. - Second, safeguard justice for marginalized communities in managing their natural resources and environment. - Third, social movement innovation & democracy deepening. - Fourth, promote openness & accountability within the digital data ecosystem. - Finally, cross-cutting programs in responding and recovering from Covid-19 and ensuring the protection of human rights defenders. In realizing these program clusters, Tifa is taking forward previous fundings whilst wishing to partner with Indonesian stakeholders, communities, and the private sectors (e.g. Facebook & Luminate), particularly those who regard participation & inclusion as utmost importances.
