Jo Barendse has extensive experience in the field of education, having served as a Teacher at Tigard-Tualatin School District since August 1984. In this role, Barendse functions as an Educational Technology Specialist, focusing on digital design and fabrication, along with teaching CTE/computer science and physical education. Barendse is also certified as a PADI Scuba OWSI Instructor and an Oregon Driver Education Instructor. Prior to this, Barendse taught at Parkrose School District from 1984 to 1988. Barendse holds multiple degrees, including a BS in Education (Elementary Education/Physical Education) from Western Oregon University, a MAT in Education from Lewis & Clark College, and a degree in Educational Administration with a focus on Foundations in Leadership from George Fox University.

Tigard-Tualatin School District (TTSD) serves part of the suburban Portland metropolitan area including the cities of Tigard, Tualatin, Durham, and King City, as well as the unincorporated communities of Metzger and Bull Mountain. TTSD provides programming from Pre-school to 12th grade with an emphasis on student achievement, equity, talent, and climate and culture. All K-12 students experience personalized digital learning with a focus on critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity, as well as opportunities to experience, college, career, and technical classes, preparing them for success after high school. TTSD hires and retains staff who are catalysts for learning and who nurture a school community where everyone feels safe, valued, and connected.
