Jim Passmore

Chief Architect at Torch.AI

Jim Passmore has worked in the tech industry since 1981. Jim began their career at IBM as a Programmer/Developer, working on the ISPF Development team and taking part in the design and development of the System Application Architecture Dialog Manager (SAA/DM) for OS/2 as a project leader. In 1989, they transitioned to a Systems Engineer role, working with various large customer organizations as part of a marketing team and specializing in supporting their software development efforts and workstation based software development tools.

In 1996, Passmore worked with Hoechst Marion Roussel/Aventis Pharmaceuticals as an I/T Architect, designing and developing a sales force automation application for a pharmaceutical customer. From 2004-2007, they worked with the USDA/FSA as an I/T Architect, leading the modernization of the agency's applications based on Services Oriented Architecture (SOA).

Passmore then joined IBM Cloud in 2007 as a Technical Lead for IBM Cloud SoftLayer Sales Effectiveness. In this role, they built, deployed, and executed IBM Cloud and SoftLayer training, enablement, and technical workshops. Jim also served as an I/T Architect, leading the Opportunity to Order Architecture & Agile Delivery department.

From 2014-2019, Passmore worked as a Contractor for Contra Software, LLC as an Application Development Lead/Lead Architect. Jim worked with a team of back end and UI developers to build and deploy an application that included the use of Tomcat, Java, Spring, RESTful web services, NoSQL database, caching with Redis, queuing with RabbitMQ, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, SCSS, and AngularJS.

Most recently, Passmore joined Torch.AI as the Chief Architect in 2019. Jim designed and implemented a microservice architecture deploying Spring Boot applications in Docker containers in a Kubernetes environment, which interacted with a variety of persistence services including Postgresql, Elasticsearch, etc. The microservices had the ability to access files from cloud storage in both AWS and GCP.

Jim Passmore's education history includes a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from The University of Kansas, obtained between 1978 and 1981, and an Associate of Science in Agriculture/Horticulture from Cloud County Community College, obtained between 1976 and 1978. Additionally, they have obtained five certifications, including an IBM Certification Exam Developer Level III in January 2016, an IBM Certified I/T Architect in June 1997, an IBM Certification Exam Developer Level I, an IBM Certified Solution Advisor - SoftLayer V1, and an IBM Certified Solution Architect - SoftLayer V1.
