Judith Cohen

Dr. Cohen is a Board-Certified Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist, Medical Director of the Center for Traumatic Stress in Children & Adolescents at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Professor of Psychiatry at Drexel University College of Medicine. With Anthony Mannarino, PhD and Esther Deblinger, PhD, she developed and tested Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), an evidence-based treatment for traumatized children and their caregivers. Together they have written Treating Trauma and Traumatic Grief in Children and Adolescents, now in its 2nd edition; and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Children and Adolescents: Treatment Applications, published by Guilford Press. Dr. Cohen has received more than twenty federal grants related to child trauma. She served on the Board of Directors of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children and received its Outstanding Professional Award. She is a past member of the Board of Directors of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, past Associate Editor of its Journal of Traumatic Stress, and received its Sarah Haley Memorial Award for Professional Excellence. Dr. Cohen is Co-Chair of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Child Maltreatment and Violence Committee, first author of its PTSD practice parameters, a past member of its Journal's Editorial Board, and recipient of its Rieger Award for Scientific Achievement. Dr. Cohen is on the Advisory Boards to Sesame Street and the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors to support military children who have experienced traumatic grief. She has published and presented extensively on the assessment and evidence-based treatment of traumatized children.
