TransGard

Every year, climbing animals and birds cause hundreds of substation power outages that leave thousands without power – and cost millions in repairs. Fortunately, TransGard has developed proven solutions that currently protect thousands of substations. For 30 years, TransGard fences have prevented power outages from squirrels, raccoons, and snakes, among others. This specially engineered substation fencing system that delivers a humane – but effective – electric shock to climbing animals. TransGard also introduced Laser Bird Defense, a superior bird deterrent for the electric power industry. For decades, bird incursions at substations have resulted in equipment damage, outages and expensive cleanups due to corrosive bird droppings. The existing deterrents provide only temporary, spotty relief. With the fully automated Laser Bird Defense, substations can deploy an array of patterns to prevent birds from entering or nesting in substations. Birds perceive the system’s approaching laser beam as a physical danger and disperse to seek safety. Today, TransGard protects over 4,000 substations in the U.S. and Canada, offering critical benefits to utilities and their customers.
