Dr. Richard Nickson

Network Director - Active Travel at Transport for Greater Manchester

Dr. Richard Nickson has a diverse work experience in various roles related to transportation planning and engineering. Dr. Richard currently serves as the Programme Director for Transport for Greater Manchester, where they are responsible for delivering the Active Travel Programme, the largest active travel network programme in the U.K. Dr. Richard previously worked as an Account Director at Elgin - home of one.network from 2012 to 2019. In addition, they were a Doctoral Training Associate at The University of Salford, focusing on community led planning. Dr. Nickson also has experience as a Director at Richard Nickson Consulting Ltd and as a Network Strategy Manager at Cheshire West and Cheshire Council. Prior to that, they held a Chief Officer role as the Highways Operational Manager at Cheshire County Council, where they achieved success in casualty reduction and sustainable travel. Dr. Richard also served as a Principal Engineer at Cheshire County Council and Chester City Council, leading and developing multi-disciplinary teams for transportation planning and engineering projects. Earlier in their career, Dr. Nickson worked as a Traffic Group Engineer and in the City Treasurer's Department at Leicester City Council. Dr. Richard began their career as a Draughtsman at Newman Tonks Engineering.

Dr. Richard Nickson's education history begins with their time at De La Salle Grammar Liverpool from 1979 to 1986, where they pursued a field of study in design. Following this, they attended Loughborough University from 1986 to 1989 and earned a BA Hons degree in Design and Technology, with a First-class distinction. Continuing their educational journey, Dr. Nickson joined Imperial College London and the University of London from 1994 to 1997, where they obtained a Diploma of Imperial College in Transport as well as an MSc degree in Transport, respectively. Lastly, from 2012 to 2019, Dr. Nickson attended The University of Salford and completed their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Sustainable Regeneration - Communities.
