Nicole Vaz

Nicole Vaz is General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer at Trillium Health Partners (THP). In this role she is accountable for overseeing legal services, corporate governance, internal audit, insurance, regulatory compliance, corporate risk and conflict of interest management, and whistleblowing.

Nicole has been General Counsel at THP since 2013 and brings nearly two decades of legal and strategic expertise and leadership in the area of health law and health care to her role. Prior to joining THP, Nicole was a partner in a downtown Toronto law firm where her defence litigation practice focused on health law, specifically providing legal support to physician members of the Canadian Medical Protective Association and insurance defence. Nicole has also practiced as a corporate commercial defence litigator.

Nicole has extensive civil medical defence and professional regulatory experience. She has managed a wide variety of civil litigation matters in courts across the province as well as matters brought before the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. She has also brought cases to the provincial Health Professions Appeal and Review Board, and has appeared before independent provincial tribunals including the Consent and Capacity Board.

Nicole is a board member with the Credit Valley Family Health Team, a group of family physicians, residents and health professionals who provide primary care services to the Mississauga area.

Nicole holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Political Science from Western University and her Bachelor of Laws from Dalhousie University. After being called to the Ontario Bar she began her legal career as a Law Clerk for one of the Honourable Justices of the Supreme Court of Canada in Ottawa.
