Shane O'Mara is a Professor of Experimental Brain Research at the Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience, Trinity College Dublin, since June 1993. O'Mara's research focuses on the relationships between synaptic plasticity, cognition, and learned behavior. Key research interests include the neurobiology of learning and memory, brain repair mechanisms, drug action in the central nervous system, and various models of neurodegeneration and stress-related disorders. Additionally, O'Mara serves as a Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator, exploring the cognitive functions of the thalamus in relation to episodic memory alongside Professor John Aggleton. O'Mara also holds the position of Director of TCIN, which emphasizes interdisciplinary research across various fields. Prior experience includes roles at the University of Oxford as a research assistant, DPhil student, and later transitioning from postdoctoral scientist to lecturer to professor. O'Mara earned a DPhil in Experimental Psychology from the University of Oxford and a Master of Arts in Psychology from the University of Galway.
