Samuel Gratzl has a diverse work experience in the field of data exploration and visualization. Samuel has worked as a Principal Research Engineer at Truveta since August 2021. Prior to that, they worked as a Freelance Data Exploration and Visualization Consultant, specializing in the design and implementation of customized visual exploration web applications, starting from October 2016.
Samuel has also worked as a Research Software Engineer at Carnegie Mellon University from July 2020 to September 2021, where they were responsible for converting the front end of the COVIDcast project into a production-ready product and ensuring code quality and best practices.
In 2019, they worked as a Senior Research And Development Engineer Trainee at Kitware Inc., where they designed and implemented scalable visualizations and backend analysis algorithms for the Metabolomics project. Samuel also migrated the SlicerCLI Girder plugin in a short amount of time.
Samuel had a short-term stint as a Visiting Researcher at Monash University in 2019, where they led a project on the online visual interaction of the MiniZinc constraint programming language and visualized and analyzed study results of different performance measurement refactorings.
Samuel Gratzl also has experience as a Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at datavisyn GmbH from November 2016 to April 2019, where they designed the architecture and implemented the Target Discovery Platform (TDP).
Samuel has worked as a Lecturer at Hagenberg Campus - FH Upper Austria and Fachhochschule Salzburg, teaching classes on Big Data Analytics and Interactive Visualization.
During their tenure as a Pre- and Postdoctoral Associate at Johannes Kepler Universität Linz from November 2012 to December 2017, they conducted research on Guided Visual Exploration in the biomedical domain, implemented research prototypes used by companies such as Microsoft and Boehringer Ingelheim, and designed and implemented the Phovea Web Analytics platform.
Additionally, Samuel Gratzl served as a Teaching Assistant at Imperial College London in February and March 2016.
Samuel Gratzl earned their Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Johannes Kepler Universität Linz in 2010. Samuel then pursued a Master's degree in Computer Science from the same university and successfully completed it in 2012. Following their Master's, Samuel continued their education at Johannes Kepler Universität Linz, where they obtained their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computer Science in 2017.
In addition to their formal education, Samuel Gratzl also obtained a certification in Deep Learning from Coursera in February 2020.
