The Turkish Red Crescent was born of a desire of a group of idealist Ottoman doctors to treat wounded and soldiers on the battlefield. The National Society, formerly known as "Ottoman Relief Society for the Wounded and Sick Soldiers"​, was funded on 11 July 1868. Later on in 1923, the Society was renamed as the Turkey Red Crescent Association and finally in 1947 the organization named Turkish Red Crescent.
