Salem Gugsa

Salem Gugsa is a Foreign Service Health Officer at USAID since January 2024 and a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Washington since November 2013, where additional roles include Clinical Instructor and Senior Research and Evaluation Technical Advisor, focused on enhancing program effectiveness through implementation science projects. Prior experience includes serving as the Deputy Director of the Office of Global Health at the Health Resources and Services Administration from February 2021 to January 2024, managing global health programs and leading strategic information initiatives. Previous roles also encompass Quality Improvement Advisor and Epidemiologist positions, as well as public health evaluations coordination at the University of Washington and the Washington State Department of Health. Education includes a PhD in Biological Anthropology and an MPH in Epidemiology from the University of Washington, a Bachelor of Science in Physiology and Neurobiology from the University of Maryland, and a Bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems from the University of Maryland Global Campus.
