Michael Karnes has a wealth of experience in software development, research, teaching, and consulting. In 2021, they began working as a Principal Software Development Engineer for Ubihere. Prior to this, they were an Autonomy Technology Research Center Intern at the Air Force Research Laboratory in 2018, 2019, and 2020. In 2015, they were a Graduate Engineering Consultant for The Medical Device Initiative (MDI). From 2013 to 2015, they were a Graduate Research Assistant-PhD and Graduate Teaching Assistant at The Ohio State University. During this time, they developed a tool to aid surgeons in the inter-operative determination of tumor resection margins and a spectral impedance imaging device capable of distinguishing cancerous from non-cancerous tissues in real-time. In 2012 and 2011, they were an R&D Co-op at Ethicon, Inc. for Sedation and Harmonic, respectively. From 2009 to 2012, they were an Undergraduate Research Assistant, ASME President, Vice President, Project Manager, and Team Lead at Miami University, as well as a Resident Assistant.
Michael Karnes completed their high school education at St. Charles Prepratory in 2008. Michael then attended Miami University and obtained a Bachelor's Degree with Departmental Honors in Mechanical Engineering and a Minor in Statistics in 2013. In the same year, they obtained their Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) E certification from NCEES. Michael then pursued a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering at The Ohio State University, which they completed in 2016. Michael is currently working towards their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Civil Engineering-Photogrammetric Computer Vision at The Ohio State University, which they are expected to complete in 2021.
