Werner Helsen is a Professor at KU Leuven, having held various academic positions since 1989, including roles as Assistant Professor and Full Professor. Helsen's research focuses on the visual control of goal-directed movements, performance enhancement, and injury prevention in professional sports, as well as the cognitive aspects of skilled perception and performance. In addition to academic pursuits, Helsen is deeply involved in sports science, serving as a training expert and consultant for UEFA, FIFA, and the Belgian football governing body (KBVB) since the late 1990s, where responsibilities included developing training programs for elite referees. Helsen also founded TopSportsLab in 2009, a spin-off from KU Leuven aimed at advancing sports training. Helsen holds a PhD and Doctor of Movement Sciences from KU Leuven, alongside Master's and Bachelor's degrees from the same institution.
