Dhiraj Singh

Lead Scientist at Umami Meats

Dhiraj is the Lead Scientist on the media development team at Umami Meats, where he leads the development and optimization of serum-free media for the various stages of the process.

Prior to joining Umami Meats, he led the cell biology team and managed R&D for the efficient production of milk and high-value milk components at TurtleTree. Before he decided to move into the world of alternate proteins, Dhiraj was a postdoctoral fellow at NUS, where he led translational research projects from establishing in vitro models to investigate the effect of gestational diabetes on fetal brain development to diabetic wound healing and the impact of hypoxia on brain development. Dhiraj completed his B.Tech in Biotechnology at the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), M.Tech in Biotechnology at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, and earned his Ph.D. degree in Cell & Molecular Biology at Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

Dhiraj’s interests lie primarily in the area of translational research wherein fundamental discoveries, developed in the lab can be transformed into commercial ventures that address unmet needs in the market. His consistent drive to innovate through scientific discovery is the reason for his career aspirations in the field of cellular agriculture/alternate proteins.
