George Gotto serves as the Director at the UMKC Institute for Human Development and has held various leadership roles, including Interim Director and Associate Director of Research. At the University of Missouri-Kansas City, George is the Senior Director of Research and Institute Programs and also a Research Associate Professor at the School of Medicine. Previous experiences include work at the Beach Center on Disability, focusing on family quality of life for families with disabilities, and conducting ethnographic research on the Mixe Indians in Mexico during doctoral candidacy. George's career began as a Research Specialist at Northern Arizona University's Institute for Human Development, where applied research with American Indian organizations was emphasized. George holds a Ph.D. in Medical Anthropology from The University of Kansas and has advanced degrees in Cultural Anthropology and English/Spanish.

As an applied research and training center for human services at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, UMKC IHD reports to the Office of the Provost and serves as a bridge between the university and community. Through our engagement efforts, we provide an inter-disciplinary approach to solving problems through research, education, training, and public service. UMKC IHD is the federally designated University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) for the state of Missouri. We are a member of the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) and one of 67 UCEDDs located in every state and United States territory.
