Underscore News

Underscore News specializes in collaborative journalism. We partner with other media organizations to leverage resources across newsrooms and produce underreported stories that really matter. Those stories are published online and distributed in cooperation with our media partners. Founded by the former Oregon team of InvestigateWest, we have a track record for managing complex projects and explaining complicated issues. We support projects that are staffed by skilled journalists, photojournalists and data analysts who tackle public service journalism. Our partners include radio and newspaper partners, magazines and documentarians. Across those platforms, our quality is consistent: we combine deeply probing journalism with superb writing and excellent storytelling. Whether analyzing concussion records from public high schools, data on housing trends in urban markets, or legal trends in Indian Country, we focus on telling compelling stories that untangle difficult issues and are critical to the equitable functioning of the communities we serve. UNDERSCORE is a nonprofit organization, supported by grants and donations and committed volunteers. We are led by a dedicated board, a talented executive director, and an Indian Country Advisory Team that counsels us on our Indian Country reporting.
