Head Of Science, Culture And Communication Statistics at UNESCO

José Pessoa has a diverse work experience spanning over several years. José started their career at Statistics Canada in 1995 as a Research Analyst and later became a Project Manager and Information Officer at the Council of Ministers of Education Canada (CMEC). In 1998, they became a Project Manager and Analyst at Statistics Canada. José then joined UNESCO in 2001 and held various roles, including Statistician (Programme Specialist) in Education and Culture Statistics. In 2017, they became the Head of Unit for Culture and Communication Statistics at UNESCO. Recently, in April 2020, they became the Head of Science, Culture, and Communication Statistics at UNESCO.

José Pessoa earned a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Geography from the University of Waterloo from 1991 to 1994. Prior to that, they completed a Bachelor of Environmental Studies (B.E.S.) in Honours Co-op Geography from the same institution between 1986 and 1991. Before attending university, José completed their secondary education at Aurora High School, earning an Ontario Secondary School Honour Graduation Diploma (SSHGD) in 1986. José also obtained an Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma (SSGD) from the same high school between 1981 and 1985.
