Alfonso Barragues is a seasoned professional with extensive experience in human rights and development within the United Nations system. Currently serving as Deputy Chief and External Relations Advisor at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) since January 2012, Barragues previously held roles as Technical Human Rights Advisor and Human Rights Officer at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from March 1995 to January 2012. Barragues has been instrumental in promoting a Human Rights-Based Approach to Development, ensuring access to justice and human rights awareness, and leading investigations into human rights violations for the United Nations Observation Mission in Angola. Earlier in his career, Barragues contributed as an Electoral Officer monitoring Mozambique's first multi-party elections and as a Technical Officer supporting the demobilization of troops under the Rome Peace Agreement. Barragues holds a Licenciado en Derecho from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and a Bachillerato in Humanities from Instituto de Bachillerato Ramiro de Maeztu.
