Brian Smith, JD, MBA, was appointed Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer (CECO) in October 2019, after serving in an interim capacity since November 2017. He serves in this role concurrently with his other responsibilities as senior associate vice chancellor, Research.

In the CECO role, Mr. Smith oversees a wide range of compliance-related matters for the campus and health system, including clinical compliance, human and animal research, research integrity, financial conflicts of interest, and whistleblower and retaliation complaints. Mr. Smith represents the office of ethics and compliance at campus-wide and select UC systemwide committees, councils, and boards.

Mr. Smith brings experience from his positions at other leading universities. Before joining UCSF in 2014, Smith worked at both the University of Oregon and UC San Diego, where his responsibilities included research, education, and business administration offices.

Mr. Smith concurrently serves UCSF as the associate vice chancellor for research infrastructure and operations where he is responsible for day-to-day operations, management, and oversight of several key components of the UCSF enterprise: sponsored research; laboratory animal resource center; and environment, health and safety. Mr. Smith is also coordinating the integration into UCSF of research support services for the Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI).
