John A'Vant is an experienced professional in law enforcement and criminal justice with extensive background in investigative roles and training. Currently serving as the Lead Investigator for the Providence External Review Authority (PERA) since August 2024, John A'Vant focuses on investigating police misconduct and reviewing departmental policies. As a National De-Escalation Training Instructor at the University of New Haven since September 2023, John A'Vant specializes in de-escalation techniques and crisis intervention. Additionally, John A'Vant has been the Managing Director of the Rhode Island Guardians Association since March 2017, advocating for officers of color and addressing complex law enforcement issues. Previous experiences include teaching criminal justice at Cranston High School East, working as a Federal Background Investigator with Perspecta, and serving as a Detective Lieutenant with the Rhode Island State Police from 1990 to 2015. Education includes a Master’s degree in Administration of Justice/Homeland Security from Salve Regina University and a Bachelor’s degree in Administration of Justice from Roger Williams University.
