Ethan Basch has a diverse and extensive work experience. Ethan started their career in 2000 as the Founder and Director of Natural Standard, a position they held until 2012. From 2003 to 2012, they worked as an Oncologist and Health Services Researcher at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. In 2011, they became a Board Member of the International Society for Quality of Life Research, a position they held until 2014. That same year, they joined JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) as an Associate Editor for Oncology. In 2012, Basch commenced their tenure at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, initially as an Oncologist and Director of Cancer Outcomes Research until 2020, when they assumed the roles of Chief of Oncology, Physician-in-Chief of the Cancer Hospital, and Director of Cancer Outcomes Research. Basch has also served on the boards of various organizations, including the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
Ethan Basch holds a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Harvard Medical School, which they obtained between 1994 and 1998. Ethan then completed an Oncology Fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and an Internal Medicine Internship/Residency at Massachusetts General Hospital. In 2005, Basch earned a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Epidemiology from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Prior to that, they obtained a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in English Literature from the University of Oxford in 1991 and a Bachelor's degree in Literature from Brown University in 1989.
