Andrew T. Allen, PhD, serves as the vice president for institutional effectiveness and strategic initiatives. Dr. Allen is responsible for maintaining USD’s regional accreditation with the WASC Senior College and University Commission and for the implementation of USD’s strategic plan, Envisioning 2024. Dr. Allen oversees Information Technology Services, Institutional Research and Planning, the Mulvaney Center for Community, Awareness and Social Action, and the Changemaker Hub.
Dr. Allen has extensive administrative experience at USD. From July 2013 to June 2017, Dr. Allen served as vice president and provost overseeing all degree and non-degree educational programs and support services; all global programs spanning 44 countries; worldwide partnerships and collaborations; and technology platform supporting over 10,000 employees and students. Dr. Allen was responsible for all academic units (College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business, Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering, Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science, Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies, School of Law, and School of Leadership and Education Sciences), Copley Library, Professional and Continuing Education, Information Technology Services, Admissions, Financial Aid, Community Service-Learning, Career Services, Institutional Research and Planning, the Center for Inclusion and Diversity, the International Center, the Changemaker Hub, the Center for Catholic Thought and Culture, and University Galleries. From July 2008 to June 2013, Dr. Allen served as associate provost overseeing Career Services, Community Service-Learning, Institute of College Initiatives (Upward Bound, Student Support Services, McNair Program), Center for Educational Excellence, Institutional Research and Planning, and Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Academic Liaison Officer. Dr. Allen successfully led the preparations for the WASC review of USD that culminated in summer 2012 with reaffirmation of accreditation and the next full review scheduled for Fall 2021. Previously he served in the School of Business as the interim dean from September 2006 to June 2008 and as associate dean from June 2004 to August 2006. A major focus in these roles concerned professional and regional reaffirmation of accreditation.
Dr. Allen joined the economics faculty at USD in September 1984. In addition to teaching undergraduate, graduate, and executive courses in macroeconomics, econometrics, and statistics, Dr. Allen created courses in Money and Banking, Law and Economics and Sports Economics.
Before joining the faculty of the University of San Diego in 1984, Dr. Allen taught at Illinois State University and San Diego State University.
Dr. Allen has undergraduate, Master’s and PhD degrees in economics from the University of Illinois.
