Jairo Lugo-Ocando is a distinguished academic currently serving as a Professor at the University of Sharjah since January 2022, with a research focus on poverty, development, and the media's statistical representations. Previous roles include Professor in Residence and Director of Executive and Graduate Education at Northwestern University in Qatar from August 2018 to January 2022, and Associate Professor at the University of Leeds from February 2015 to January 2022. Lugo-Ocando has also lectured at the University of Sheffield and the University of Stirling. An accomplished author, notable works include "Blaming the Victim: How Global Journalism Fails Those in Poverty" and "Developing News: Global Journalism and the Coverage of 'Third World'." Lugo-Ocando holds a PhD in Communication and Media Studies from the University of Sussex and has completed advanced study in Science Communication and Public Engagement at The University of Edinburgh. Educational credentials include a Master’s degree in Politics & International Relations from Lancaster University and a Bachelor's degree in Media Studies & Journalism from Universidad del Zulia.
