Cameron Hanna

Principal Scientist at Unnatural Products

Cameron Hanna has a diverse work experience. From 2013 to 2016, they served as a Combat Medical Technician (Medic) in the New Zealand Army. From 2016 to 2018, they were a PhD Student at the University of Sydney, where they conducted chemical synthesis and immunological evaluation of large lipidated proteins, total synthesis of mycobacteria-derived glycolipids and their analogues, synthesis and mechanistic evaluation of novel immune-suppressing peptides, and synthesis and evaluation of novel glycolipopeptide cancer vaccines. In 2018, they were a Research Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where they developed an antibody-directed therapeutic delivery system based on the anthrax toxin and synthesized and evaluated cyclic dinucleotide mimics as STING receptor agonists. In 2020, they were a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Auckland, where they synthesized and conducted medicinal chemistry on peptide natural products, and constructed a flow chemistry instrument for solid-phase peptide synthesis. From 2021 to 2022, they were a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where they developed peptide drug discovery platforms based on phage display and affinity selection-mass spectrometry (AS-MS) and developed immunotherapies based on engineered red blood cells. Currently, they are a Scientist II at Unnatural Products Inc.

Cameron Hanna has a long and varied education history. From 2007 to 2011, they attended Westlake Boys High School, followed by a Bachelor of Science (BSc) (Hons) in Chemistry from the University of Otago from 2012 to 2015. Cameron then completed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Chemistry and Chemical Biology at the University of Sydney from 2016 to 2020. Most recently, they were a Research Scholar (PhD Exchange) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2018 and 2019.
