The Organization

For over 50 years, Urban Community School (UCS) has served Cleveland’s near west side children by providing an individualized, innovative, and challenging education. Rooted in the Ursuline Sisters’ tradition of faith, character, and educational excellence, UCS engages our faculty, families, and community partners in the successful whole child development of students. UCS serves nearly 750 students from 6 weeks old - 8th grade using restorative practices and conscious discipline. Eighty percent of our families earn less than 300% of the Federal Poverty Level. The growing campus in Ohio City is home to The MetroHealth System, House of Champions, Urban Squash Cleveland, USA Lacrosse, The Refugee Response and Facing History and Ourselves.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Follow appropriate school bus routes, picking up and dropping off students at the designated locations and times.
  • Drive in a safe and conscientious manner following all state/federal laws and school policies.
  • Attentive, courteous, and friendly with students ranging from age 5 - 13.
  • Communicate with students, parents/caregivers, and educators.
  • Maintain a clean vehicle and be attentive to mechanical issues.
  • Completes periodic mileage reports and other reports including passenger counts.
  • Attends various meetings regarding safety, first aid, and training updates as required.

Education, Experience, and Requirements 

  • Hold a valid CDL - Class B with school bus, passenger, and airbrake endorsements.
  • Successful completion of a regular T8 physical and drug/alcohol testing. 
  • Possession of a clean, safe driving record. 
  • Knowledge of safe driving practices. 
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and extreme caution while driving. 
  • FBI/BCI background check required.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Prolonged periods of standing, walking, and climbing stairs in a two story building. 
  • Prolonged periods of sitting and driving. 

Compensation and Benefits

  • Hourly wage commensurate with experience ($23 - $27 per hour)

  • Status: Part-Time; Non-Exempt 
  • Reports to: Operations Manager 
  • Hours & Schedule: 20 hours per week

Urban Community School

Urban Community School (UCS) strives to break social and economic barriers to success for Cleveland's near west side children by providing an individualized, innovative, and challenging education. Rooted in the Ursuline Sisters’ tradition of faith, character, and educational excellence, UCS engages our faculty, families, and community partners in the successful whole child development of our students. UCS currently serves nearly 700 students from six weeks to 14 years old (8th grade). Our campus has grown with the addition of various partners. We are able to provide our students and families with wraparound services, serving the whole child. The UCS student body is representative of the eight neighborhoods we serve. Our students are 28% Hispanic, 27% White, 25% Multiracial, 19% Black or African American, and 1% Asian. The majority of children attending UCS are economically disadvantaged and approximately 75% qualify for the National School Lunch Program.
