Ram Kannan is a distinguished academic with extensive experience in the field of biochemistry and ophthalmology. Currently a Professor at UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute and Doheny Eye Institute since 2017 and 2002 respectively, Ram Kannan focuses on oxidative stress and signaling mechanisms in age-related macular degeneration (AMD), as well as novel roles of crystallins in AMD therapy. Previous roles include Professor at USC Keck School of Medicine from 1989 to 2002, researching antioxidant defense mechanisms and transport barriers in the brain and eye, and Adjunct Associate Professor at UCLA & VA Wadsworth Hospital from 1981 to 1989. Early career highlights include serving as a Research Biochemist at Wadsworth VA Hospital Center from 1974 to 1981, a DAAD Research Fellow in Cologne from 1972 to 1974, and a Postdoctoral Fellow at Royal Veterinary College, University of Stockholm from 1970 to 1971. Ram Kannan earned a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Osmania University, along with a Master's degree and a Bachelor of Applied Science in Chemistry.
