Andre Odendaal

Vice Chancellor's Writer-in-residence at University of the Western Cape

Andre Odendaal is a distinguished historian and academic with extensive experience in higher education and heritage studies. Currently serving as the Vice Chancellor's Writer-in-Residence at the University of the Western Cape since January 2021, Andre Odendaal has been an Independent Scholar since January 2002, holding the title of Honorary Professor in History and Heritage Studies. Previous leadership roles include Chief Executive Officer at the Western Province Cricket Association from 2004 to 2015, and Founding Director of the Robben Island Museum from 1996 to 2002. Andre Odendaal's foundational contributions to the University of the Western Cape as the Founding Director of the Mayibuye Centre for History and Culture in South Africa from 1990 to 1997 further underscore a commitment to historical scholarship and cultural heritage. Andre Odendaal earned a Ph.D. in History from St John's College, Cambridge University, between 1979 and 1983.
