Aviv Madar

Director, Data Scientist at Valo

Aviv Madar has a diverse work experience spanning from 1997 to the present. Starting with their most recent position, they serve as the Director of Data Scientist at Valo since February 2021. Prior to that, Aviv worked at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) from 2016 to 2021, where they held various roles including Senior Expert II data science, Investigator III, and Investigator II.

In 2013, Aviv worked as a Postdoc at Cornell University, focusing on leveraging regulatory annotations of the human genome to identify non-coding sequence variants contributing to autoimmune disease risk. Aviv developed visual schemas and employed methodologies such as feature engineering, clustering, and dimensionality reduction.

Before Cornell, from 2010 to 2013, Aviv served as a Post-doc at NYU, where they characterized the regulatory network controlling Th17 cell differentiation and identified new genes. Aviv also held additional roles at NYU, including Treasurer for the graduate student council and Doctoral Student, where they developed and extended computational methods for inference of genetic regulatory networks.

Furthermore, Aviv completed a summer research project at the Weizmann Institute of Science in 2005, studying the impact of Stromal Derived Factor 1 (SDF1) on lymphocyte migration using various techniques.

Additionally, Aviv gained teaching experience as an online Teacher at eTeacher from 2003 to 2005, and as a Tutor for undergraduates at Technion - Israel Institute of Technology from 2002 to 2005.

Before pursuing their academic and scientific career, Aviv worked as a Research Assistant at Rambam Medical Center from 2004 to 2005.

Lastly, Aviv served as a Logistics Officer in the Israel Defense Forces from 1997 to 2001, where they managed supplies and worked with suppliers.

Aviv Madar holds a PhD in Computational Biology from New York University, which they obtained from 2005 to 2010. Prior to that, they completed their undergraduate education at Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, where they earned a B.Sc. in Biotechnology and Food Engineering, as well as a B.A. in Biology from 2002 to 2005. In addition, Aviv has obtained several certifications, including the Deep Learning Specialization, Sequence Models, Convolutional Neural Networks, Improving Deep Neural Networks: Hyperparameter tuning, Regularization and Optimization, Neural Networks and Deep Learning, Structuring Machine Learning Projects, Introduction to Data Science in Python, and Machine Learning. These certifications were earned from Coursera, with the most recent obtained in June 2020.
