Huang Hung

Trustee at Vassar College

Ms. Huang Hung was elected to the Vassar College board of trustees in 2013.

Ms. Hung is a writer, media expert and businesswoman operating in mainland China. She was the CEO of CIMG (China Interactive Media Group), which publishes iLook Magazine. In addition, Ms. Hung is a popular columnist in China, having written columns for Sanlian Magazine, T Magazine and Timeout. She is popular on Weibo, the Chinese Twitter equivalent, and has 11 million followers.

Huang is a Beijing native who was educated in the United States. She went to junior high school at Little Red School House in New York City and graduated from Vassar College in 1984. Prior to her job at CIMG, Huang was an investment consultant and commodities trader.

Huang has also published a bestselling autobiography entitled My Abnormal Life as a Publisher, and starred in an independent film, Perpetual Motion, which made its international debut at the Venice Film Festival in 2005. In 2011, TIME selected Huang as one of 100 world’s influential people.

Ms. Hung is an avid supporter of local designers, particularly young designers in fashion and lifestyle. She had devoted her magazine to reporting about Chinese modern lifestyle and design. She also opened a store to provide retail platform to the designers she promoted.

Ms. Hung is very vocal on women’s issues in China. She has a podcast program which aims to empower women in China. In addition Ms. Hung is also an advocate for LGBTQ issues in China. In 2009, iLook Magazine was the first Chinese magazine to devote an entire issue entitled “Gay China” to LGBTQ issues in China, and celebrating their successes.
