Jeffrey S. Akman, MD is a psychiatrist on the full-time faculty at George Washington University (GW). In January 2020 he completed a nine-year tenure as the Vice President for Health Affairs, the dean of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and the Walter A. Bloedorn, MD Chair of Administrative Medicine. Under his leadership, GW saw significant expansion of its biomedical and health sciences research, clinical services including the creation of the GW Cancer Center and Transplant Institute, innovative educational programs as well as its diversity and inclusion efforts. Recognized as a pioneer in HIV/AIDS psychiatry and for his expertise in LGBT mental health, Dr. Akman previously served as the Leon M. Yochelson Professor and Chair of the GW Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. He received his B.S. at Duke University and completed his M.D. and psychiatry residency training at George Washington University.
