Luis Ponce Cabrera

Luis Ponce Cabrera has a diverse work experience spanning over several companies and roles. Luis is currently the President of Onteko Inc, where they focus on the development of new technology to improve agrochemical capture by ants using selective laser treatment. Luis is also responsible for creating the intellectual property portfolio and securing financing through capital raising and grant applications.

Prior to their current role, Luis worked as a Laser Engineer at View, Inc from 2018 onwards. Before that, they served as a Senior Research Associate at the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) from 2014 to 2021. At ICTP, they taught Laser Physics and oversaw research involving the LIBS technique. Luis co-directed the Winter College on Optics during their time there.

Luis also worked as a Visiting Research Scholar at the University of Florida in 2017, where they conducted research on new methods for early detection of HLB disease in citrus trees using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy. Luis filed a patent for their discovery.

In 2003, Luis became a Full Professor at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional, where they oversaw the Laser Technology Laboratories and associated programs. Luis was responsible for research, strategic direction, intellectual property, prototyping, technology transfer, and more. Luis also taught postgraduate courses and undergraduate classes in various laser-related subjects.

Before joining the Instituto Politécnico Nacional, Luis worked as a Scientific Researcher at the Universidad de La Habana from 1987 to 2017. There, they founded the Laboratory of Laser Technology and led the development of various laser systems and setups. Luis also taught postgraduate and undergraduate laser-related courses.

Additionally, Luis has entrepreneurial experience as the Founder/President of BRALAX S de RL Mi from 2010 to 2016.

Luis Ponce Cabrera then continued their academic journey at the University of Havana, completing their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Physical Sciences from 1993 to 1996.
