Radu Sion

CEO, Founder at Virtalica

Radu Sion has a long and varied work experience. Radu began their career in 1994 as the Executive Director of SunSite Romania, a network of Internet servers providing archives of information, software and other publicly available resources. In 1995, they founded one of the first startups in Romania, Smart Software, and built the first Java networked software-defined message passing platform. In 1999, they worked as a Graduate Research Assistant at Purdue University. In 2000, they worked as a Software Engineer Internship at IBM. In 2001, they worked as a Researcher at NEC Corporation of America. In 2003, they worked as a Researcher at IBM's Grid Computing Group, where they designed and built the first grid-enabled database. In 2012, they were the Director of Cloud Computing Research at The Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT). From 2013 to 2020, they were the CEO and Founder of Private Machines Inc. Since 2020, they have been the CEO and Founder of Virtalica. In addition, from 2005 to 2012, they were the Director of the National Security Institute at Stony Brook University, where they created the institute and hired multiple new faculty, and the institute brought in $8m+ in new research funding in the first 12 months.

Radu Sion earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Computer Science from Purdue University between 1999 and 2004.
